May 5, 1789: Louis XVI opened the Estates-General in Versailles. The Estates-General, consisting of the First Estate (the clergy), the Second Estate (the nobility) and the Third Estate (commoners but in practise bourgeoisie), met for the first time since 1614.

June 17, 1789: after the failure of efforts to reconcile the three Estates, the representatives of the Third Estate declared themselves the National Assembly.

June 20, 1789: the National Assembly signed a pledge known as the Tennis Court Oath under which they agreed not to separate until they give France a constitution.

July 9, 1789: the National Assembly reconstituted itself as the National Constituent Assembly.

July 11, 1789: Louis XVI dismissed the French finance minister Jaques Necker.

July 14, 1789: the Parisians invaded the Dôme des Invalides and stormed the Bastille which represented the oppressive Ancien régime. After the Storming of the Bastille, which is in history widely recognized as the beginning of the French Revolution, bourgeoisie organized throughout France the National Guard and took over the administration in the cities, while peasantry attacked their landlords in rural areas (the Great Fear).
