Social turmoils

The poor economic situation in France had a big impact on the social life of most of the French.

Bad harvests in 1788 and harsh winter in 1788/89 caused a shortage of grain, consequently raising the price of bread. Because bread was the main source of nutrition for poor peasants this led to starvation. In first half of 1789 peasantry in numerous local rebellions demanded "bread and freedom" and openly criticised the French government.

Famine led also to attacks on grain transports and bakeries.
